Steve Walters (born 9 January 1972) is an English former footballer.
Walters began his career with Crewe Alexandra in 1989. He made his debut at 16 years and 119 days on 6 May 1989 against Peterborough United. Through the early part of the 1990s he built up 173 appearances for the club over all competitions, also scoring eleven goals. This included an appearance in the 1993 Football League Third Division play-off Final, which Crewe lost on epnalties to York City, though they gained automatic promotion a year later.
In the autumn of 1991, Graeme Souness was interested in signing the then 19-year-old Walters for Liverpool but when he went to watch Walters in action, it was his colleague Rob Jones who caught his attention instead and was soon on his way to Anfield.
However he dropped out of league football in 1995, aged only 23, and joined Northwich Victoria around 1995. After five years with Victoria he signed with Morecambe, where he spent one season. In 2001, he moved on to Stevenage Borough, and then on to Kidsgrove Athletic.
In contrast, Jones, the player who went from Crewe to Liverpool instead of him, went on to win an FA Cup and Football League Cup with the Merseyside giants, as well as making a number of England appearances, though his career was ended by injury in his late twenties.[1]
